CABE Webinar – Competition in Canada from 2000 to 2020: An Economy at a Crossroads

The Competition Bureau has released a major report – Competition in Canada.

The Bureau’s role is to protect and promote competition to benefit Canadian consumers and businesses. Competition drives economic growth. It encourages businesses to innovate and become more productive. It benefits consumers because it lowers prices, increases choice and improves quality.

As the enforcer of Canada’s competition laws, the Bureau has collected extensive knowledge about the dynamics of competition in important sectors and markets. However, the purpose of this research project is not to study any particular sector or market. Instead, their research provides a broader view of competition in the economy as a whole.

In this webinar, Matthew Stratthean will  present the findings of this research. The objective was to examine:

  • the general state of competition across the Canadian economy
  • how competition in Canada has evolved from 2000 to 2020
Matthew_Strathearn-208x250 Matthew Strathearn Senior Economist - Economic Analysis Directorate

Matthew Strathearn is a Senior Economist in the Economic Analysis Directorate at the Competition Bureau. He obtained his PhD in Economics from Carleton University in 2021. Before joining the Bureau, he was a Senior Analyst at the Bank of Canada. His current research interests include competition policy, empirical industrial organization, and spatial econometrics.
