CABE Webinar: The Economics of Sanctions and Conflicts: Lessons for Ukraine and NATO

The use of economic sanctions have become increasingly important as alternatives to military conflict, especially since the end of the Cold War.  The talk will provide a survey of the theories and empirics of the economics of sanctions and provide lessons and predictions on the conflict in Ukraine.  The talk will also present economic concepts of conflict to highlight an economist’s perspective on Russia, and military alliances such as NATO.

profile Adjunct Research Professor, Carlton University Binyam (Ben) Solomon

Dr. Binyam Solomon is an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University. He has previously worked for the Department of National Defence and DRDC as Defence Science expert, acting Chief Scientist and Chef Economist.  He has also served as a Special Advisor to the Parliamentary Budget Officer, and co-editor of the international field journal Defence and Peace Economics.  He has published extensively in economics, statistics and defence topics.  His research interests include political economy, aspects of national security, peacekeeping economics and time series methods.  Dr. Solomon holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Ottawa and a Ph D in Defence Economics from the University of York, United Kingdom.
