Navigating Economic Crossroads in Canada

The economic outlook for Canada this year is “getting squeezed”. Inflation has slowed but appears to be sticky; experts predict it will take time to get back to the 2% target.

At first glance, Canada appears to be in a favorable position, but a closer look shows that things are not so rosy. Real GDP growth in Canada has been relatively strong over the last two years compared to other G7 countries. Conversely, real GDP growth per Capita has been weak, lagging all G7 countries by the end of 2023.

Several factors and issues are dampening growth in Canada: declining productivity, cooling labour markets, accelerated population growth, poor consumer and business confidence, and affordable housing challenges. Also, persisting climate change issues and geo-political uncertainty continue to be key risks for the economy.

What can be done to boost productivity in Canada? What is the impact of dampening growth on the labour and housing markets in Canada? How will the economy react to new immigration targets? What are the next steps for the green transition and climate change? How will geopolitics impact the economy in the coming years? What can be done to cushion the last mile? Find out at the 2024 OEA/CABE Spring Policy Conference on April 11.
