TABE (in-person) Student Competition 2023
This is the first
TORONTO ASSOCIATION FOR BUSINESS & ECONOMICS (TABE)
STUDENT COMPETITION!
The competition is designed to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to showcase the skills they have been developing through their education. The competition is part of TABE’s effort to raise interest among young people in economics and to support critical thinking by applying economic concepts to address real world problems.
Students are asked to build a team of up to three. Solo submissions are also welcome. This is a brief policy submission, with applications due by April 30, 2023. The top three submissions will be chosen to present their findings to some of Toronto’s leading economists and business professionals on June 20th, 2023. There will be a prize for each of the finalists and access to a one-year free mentorship program with a TABE economist for the winning submission.
We are asking you to identify an economic issue in Canada you believe needs to be addressed. Issues can range from a broad spectrum of topics, whatever you feel passionate about. Some examples include lack of affordable housing, tackling inflation, urgent need for more public transit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and facilitate access to jobs, climate change and resilience, lack of support for small businesses, or inadequate healthcare.
We then want you to provide a solution to this problem. Put forward a policy solution you would like government to implement which will address the issue you have identified. We would also like to see how you would implement this policy.
For information on how to write a policy brief, please check out material provided by the Federal Government at this link.
The evaluation of the submissions will be:
- Identifying the issues (20%)
- Providing a policy recommendation (20%)
- Identifying the channels through which the policy will work to address the issue identified (30%)
- How the policy will be implemented (30%)
