Perceived Inflation and Reality: Understanding the Difference

In lieu of our annual conference held in Kingston each summer, CABE will be running a series of webinars over a period of several weeks, beginning August 25th.  The theme for this year’s virtual conference is The Impact of the Pandemic on the Economy.

CABE is pleased to present Lawrence Schembri as our keynote speaker for our 2020 virtual conference.

Perceived Inflation and Reality: Understanding the Difference

Lawrence Schembri, Deputy Governor, Bank of Canada

Surveys regularly find that the consumers’ perception of inflation is higher than officially reported CPI inflation. This difference has become more prominent during the COVID-19 containment period. In his address to CABE, Deputy Governor Lawrence Schembri will explore explanations of this difference, drawing from ongoing collaborative research by Bank of Canada and Statistics Canada. He will also speak to the implications of these findings for the conduct of monetary policy.
