Canada has successfully navigated major economic shocks in recent years. However, it faces significant headwinds from the trade conflict with the United States. Looking ahead, it is crucial for Canada to strengthen its long-term growth potential. In this context, the OECD Economic Survey of Canada discusses the macroeconomic outlook and policy challenges, balancing short-term support with further improvements in medium-term resilience. It also provides an in-depth review of Canada’s historically low productivity performance and outlines policies to boost business productivity. Further structural topics addressed in the Survey include policies to enhance housing affordability and strategies to prepare Canada for adapting to climate change.

Álvaro Pereira, OECD Chief Economist will present the findings of the Survey. For those joining the event in person, light pastries and coffee will be served.

Alvaro Pereira_001 Álvaro Pereira OECD Chief Economist and G20 Finance Deputy

Álvaro S. Pereira is currently the OECD Chief Economist and and G20 Finance Deputy. He oversees the Economics Department and provides leadership and ensures it is at the forefront of the international political economy agenda. He identifies ways in which the OECD can promote policies to improve member and partner countries long-term economic performance. He was previously the Director in the OECD Policy Studies Branch and OECD Country Studies Branch.

Prior to the OECD, Mr. Pereira was Minister for Economy and Employment in Portugal (2011-2013) and previous to that he was a professor at Simon Fraser University, Canada, a lecturer at the University of British Columbia, Canada and the University of York, UK.
