CABE Webinar: Unpacking Productivity in Canada’s Construction Sector: Challenges and Opportunities

Productivity in the Canadian construction sector reached a two-decade low in 2023. While low construction sector productivity growth is a global issue, Canada has experienced the second-largest decline in construction productivity in the G7 between 2015 and 2023.

We examine the factors that have driven this productivity decline, including rising construction costs and R&D investment. The impacts this drop in productivity has had on Canada’s construction sector and the broader economy – including the equivalent of broader macroeconomic implications. Finally, we explore potential solutions for improvement, drawing on lessons from countries such as the UK that has seen productivity improvements in the last decade.

Negash Haile is the Director of Economics and Modelling at HICC – with over a decade experience in economic modelling and analysis, infrastructure, public economics and financial analysis. Negash holds an Honours degree in Economics from the University of Ottawa and Masters in Economics from Science Po Toulouse.
