TABE Webinar: The Evolution of Immigration Policy & Economic Impacts Ahead

In recent years, Canada’s immigration policy has fuelled population growth & aggregate demand. However, the infrastructure to support this growth has not kept pace.
In this webinar, we will address why immigration is so important to Canada, how immigration policy has evolved and strategies to ensure Canada’s immigration policy remains resilient. We will also quantify how immigration will shape housing markets and the economic outlook for 2026 & beyond


Mikal Skuterud headshote Mikal Skuterud Professor of Economics, University of Waterloo

Mikal Skuterud is a Full Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo, Director of the Canadian Labour Economics Forum (CLEF), and Fellow-in-Residence and Roger Phillips Scholar of Social Policy at the C.D. Howe Institute.

He received his Master’s degree in Economics from the University of British Columbia and his Ph.D. in Economics from McMaster University. His research interests include: the labour market integration of immigrants, labour market policies that influence hours of work, and the economics of trade unions. His work has appeared in the American Economic Review, the Journal of Labor Economics, and the Canadian Journal of Economics, and has received national media coverage in the New York Times and the Globe and Mail.

Kavcic Robert Robert Kavcic BMO Capital Markets

Robert Kavcic has been with BMO Capital Markets since 2006. He plays a key role in analyzing economic, fiscal and real estate trends in Canada. Robert regularly contributes to various department publications, is a frequent commentator on economic and financial trends in the media, and a regular advisor on economic issues to Canadian policymakers.

Before joining BMO, Robert worked in the Research Department at the Bank of Canada. Robert holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, and a Master’s degree in Economics from Carleton University.
