Sports elicits an enthusiasm and a passion that is disproportionate to its economic impact on the local economy. This is especially true when it comes to large-scale events like The Olympics and The World Cup, where the economic benefits are overstated and the economic costs are understated. Despite the overwhelming evidence that suggests that hosting these events is an economic quagmire, political leaders continue to tout the economic gains to their constituents rather than highlight the non-economic reasons for hosting them.
