Getting back to Growth: Measuring Recovery across Canada’s Innovation Corridor

November 10, 2021

On October 1st, the Toronto Region Board of Trade, through its Economic Blueprint Institute (EBI),  launched the Recovery Tracker, a web-based tool that provides critical information on a monthly basis on the state of recovery across the Innovation Corridor* and its business districts. While a number of trackers assess national and/or provincial economic recovery, TRBOT’s Recovery Tracker is focused on a metropolitan scale of analysis and provides insights on how specific employment areas, or Business Districts, have been impacted by the pandemic.

Data in the Recovery Tracker includes: Labour Market indicators, Mobility trends, and In-person and E-commerce Consumer Spending among other indicators. In its first release, the Recovery Tracker pointed to an uneven economic recovery across different Business Districts in the Corridor, with the Metropolitan Centre (Toronto’s financial district and the surrounding area) experiencing one of the slowest economic recovery.

In this event, Marcy Burchfield and Saad Usmani will present the Business District framework as a valuable tool for economic planning as well as key findings from insights derived from the Recovery Tracker. The framework was introduced in Shaping our Future, a playbook for rebooting and reimagining Toronto’s regional economy.

* The Innovation Corridor comprises the five Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) of Oshawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Guelph and Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo
