She-cession and She-covery:
Insights from Ontario & Québec for the Post-Pandemic Economy
with Armine Yalnizyan

Women have been among the biggest losers in the pandemic. During a traditional recession, more men than women initially lose their jobs, but more women than men are rehired at the initial stage of recovery. The pandemic has reversed this relationship; more women than men lost their jobs initially, but the recovery of employment for women has been slow to recover for men.
In many places, a full recovery in employment among women is still pending, 22 months after the start of the pandemic. For many of the sectors that have been most affected by the pandemic, such as accommodation and food, jobs are mainly held by women.
The Montreal chapter of the Association des économistes québécois invites you to a discussion on women and the pandemic economy with Armine Yalnizyan, Fellow of the Atkinson Foundation on the Future of Workers, and originator of the term “she-cession” widely used in the English-language press to characterize the impact of the pandemic on women.
These will address, inter alia, the different economic and social dimensions of the impact of the post-pandemic recession and recovery on women; the regional and sectoral characteristics of the recovery; as well as future prospects, while the Omicron variant currently threatens to generate a “she-cession” 2.0. The presentation will be in English and will be moderated by Marie Connolly, Professor in the Department of Economics at the Université du Québec à Montréal and Director of the Human Capital Research Group.
