Atlantic Universities: A ‘SWOT’ Analysis

Atlantic universities currently face a daunting operating environment where government policies threaten future financial sustainability; student, government and public expectations are growing and operating costs escalating. At this key juncture in its history, how the university sector responds to pressure for ‘change’, among a myriad of key stakeholders, will be pivotal to its future.

Peter Halpin, outgoing Executive Director of the Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU), will share his perspectives on what may lie ahead for a sector integral to the region’s future economic growth, social and cultural development.

Peter has served as the Executive Director, Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) since December 1, 2003.

In his capacity as Executive Director, Peter serves as an advocate for the region’s university sector with governments and other key stakeholders in higher education, regionally and nationally.  In recent years, he has helped lead, among other things, the AAU’s interests in infrastructure renewal; research enterprise; prevention of sexual violence on campus; student mental health; Indigenous education; attraction and retention of international students and accessible campuses.

Prior to joining the AAU, Peter worked as a public affairs consultant, specializing in: issue and opportunity management, marketing communications, news media relations and crisis communications.

Peter graduated from Saint Mary’s University in 1973 with a B.A. (English) and was a member of the Huskies varsity basketball team from 1971-74 and a member of the 1973 National Championship team (the first national championship in Saint Mary’s history), inducted into the Saint Mary’s University Sport Hall of Fame in 2003.
