The Canadian economy is not out of the woods yet, despite the recent pickup in growth. This  improvement is not likely to be sustained and GDP is expected to contract moderately in the near term before a recovery emerges later this year.

  • But what if the Canadian economy has already  begun to recover from a soft landing last year like the Bank of Canada and many other forecasters expect?
  • And what about housing? Will house prices take off once interest rates begin to ease?
  • How will shelter costs affect inflation?
  • Does Canada actually need an additional 3.5 million dwellings, on top of those for the growth in households, to return housing to an affordable level by 2030?

Tony Stillo is the Director of Canada Economics at Oxford Economics. He leads the team responsible for preparing the macroeconomic forecast for Canada using Oxford Economics’ Global Economic Model, reporting on key data releases, as well as producing and presenting research on key issues affecting the Canadian economy. Prior to joining Oxford Economics in 2018, Tony spent much of his career at the Ontario Ministry of Finance where he most recently led a team responsible for economic modelling, forecasting and impact analysis.
