CABE Webinar: The ‘Great Canadian Slump’ is back

Canada’s lagging economic and productivity performance is no secret. And statements that this represents a national emergency are not exaggerations. Labour productivity has grown by 0.2 percent annually, on average, between early 2015 and the end of 2023. That’s the slowest growth over an eight-year period ever recorded. (At least since comparable data started in 1946.)
This matters. Productivity and pay are tightly connected. How much our jobs pay—and what’s left after taxes and inflation to buy the items we need—affects us daily. And, unfortunately, income growth has stalled to rates rarely seen in Canadian history. Only twice in the past century have we lived through more sluggish growth than today—both during serious recessions.
Dr. Tombe will discuss issues with productivity and income and suggest issues that should be addressed.

Tombe 2017 Trevor Tombe Professor of Economics at the University of Calgary, Research Fellow at The School of Public Policy

Trevor Tombe is a Professor and Graduate Program Director at the University of Calgary’s Department of Economics and a Research Fellow at The School of Public Policy. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Toronto. His research explores a broad set of topics from international trade to public finances and fiscal federalism. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles in some of the fields top journals, is co-author of the textbook Public Finance in Canada, co-editor of the recent volume Fiscal Federalism in Canada, and is Co-Director of Finances of the Nation. In addition to his academic work, he advises various governments on wide range of issues and is an active contributor to Canadian policy development and discussions through regular op-eds, general interest articles, and active media engagement.
