Michael Stepner is an assistant professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Toronto. He earned his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2019, and his BA at McGill University in 2012.

Stepner is a research principal at Opportunity Insights, an economics lab based at Harvard. His research examines the relationship between health and economic inequality, with a focus on how public policy can improve the health and financial security of low-income populations. He also serves as the network leader for the Health Trends and Inequalities Research program at the NBER Center for Aging and Health Research, and as the executive director of the Opportunity Insights Economic Tracker. His PhD research at MIT was awarded the top dissertation award from the National Academy of Social Insurance.
